Higher Photography CPD for Art Teachers – Portobello Photography School

Higher Photography CPD workshop. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND – A one-day event aimed at supporting school teachers.

We will:

  • Look at and discuss photographs by established photographers showing a wide variety of photographic techniques from early photography to contemporary arts practitioners using photography.
  • Investigate and analyse factors which influenced some of the photographers, before creating our own photographic works using a range of techniques and evaluating the results.
  • Cover camera types, camera techniques, lesson plans, resources engagement ideas and teach you how to be resourceful with available materials and lighting to make quality photographic work in your classroom.
  • Photographic portraits using natural available light using a range of camera techniques
  • Setting up and using a pop-up studio (Working with available resources in your classroom)
  • Lesson Planning
  • Evaluate and celebrate
  • Over the course of the day, you will learn how to get better quality photographs and move away from the automatic settings.

About the tutor

Alicia Bruce has 20 years of photographic experience and 10 years of teaching experience and a teaching qualification. She is currently Teaching Fellow in Photography at the University of Edinburgh. She also teaches popular photography weekends at Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow. Alicia has taught photography in several Scottish schools and has run several CPD courses for teachers at National Galleries of Scotland and engage.

Alicia has exhibited and published her photography internationally winning several awards, including the Royal Scottish Academy Morton Award. Her work is held in several public and private collections, including National Galleries of Scotland. Recent commissions include Zero Tolerance’s ‘Violence Unseen’, ‘209 Women’ at the UK Parliament, ‘Our World Heritage’ for Edinburgh World Heritage.

About Portobello

Portobello is Edinburgh’s seaside suburb with a thriving, dynamic community, beach and promenade and ever-changing sea and skyscape. It is 20 minutes by bus from the city centre.

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is suitable for teachers, artists and teaching graduates who are new to teaching Higher Photography or are looking for ideas to integrate photography into their teaching practice.

What to bring?

Participants should bring a DSLR camera, bridge or mirrorless camera with manual controls with batteries charged and a cleared memory card, a notebook and pen. Dress for the changeable weather in Edinburgh in June. You are likely to be outdoors for part of the workshop.

All students will be provided with a workshop schedule and introductory learning resources.

Our base for the day with be the wonderful Tribe Porty just 5 minutes walk from Portobello Beach.
